About
How would you describe “Reluctantly Moving to L.A.”? I called my sister for help on this one. “How do you describe the blog to your friends, Karen?” “Crazy over-sharing,” she answered. When did you start writing the blog? August 5th, 2007 at a Starbucks in NYC on 90th and 1st.
Why? My husband at the time asked me to start a blog about our cross-country drive to Los Angeles for our families. The blog would include pictures, anecdotes and cute things. He thought it would be a “creative project” for me since I was feeling very removed from the art world after getting married. I sat down at Starbucks to begin our blog and I revolted. I decided to write a blog about how I really felt about moving to L.A. and how my picture-perfect life was crumbling.
I started this blog out of necessity. I had a lot of anxiety after getting married and I yearned to be completely honest, to put my uncensored thoughts on “paper.” I was also working on a book for years, so it felt great to finally publish something.
Do you now live in L.A.? No, I moved back to NYC on August 8, 2011.
Why don’t you change the name of blog, since you are now back in New York? I think the title harks back to a feeling I had, a strength to be exactly who I am.
Where are you from? Wayland, Massachusetts – a small town outside of Boston.
Do you feel overexposed, inappropriate and scared writing the blog?
Yes.
Do you think the blog could have repercussions?
Possibly.
Why do you write it? I find it exciting and a form of relief to write about things that are honest but hard to say or admit. I often go to sleep scared of making enemies and wondering if I’m going to hell for writing it.
Are you still married? No.
Was that hard? Yes.
Did you write about it? Yup.
Where do you write? As crazy as it sounds, I often write my blog on the elliptical at the gym. I write the text on my iPhone in an email to myself and finish it at home. Ideas come to mind when I feel strong and have “reckless abandon.” I have to tell myself, “I don’t care.” I have to write the way I want and it takes a lot of sweating and music to do that. Other times I write at home in my office. I prefer to be alone because I talk to myself when I write.
Do you think you always write honestly? I do, but sometimes I think if this blog was anonymous, I may write more openly. However, I don’t think honesty and anonymity make sense for me.
